10 Things That Make A Good Friend

What Cat Says - 10 Things That Make A Good Friend

Friendship is one of the most important things in our lives and  Huggle  has asked me to make a list about what I think makes a good friend. Huggle is a social app which helps you to discover and connect with people who go to the places you go. It’s a wonderful app for making friends and meeting like-minded people. You can download it here.
With the list in mind, I thought long and hard about the things that make a good friend and there are so many things you could do to be one of these good friends. But I narrowed them down to 10 that I personally think  top the list. I hope you agree with most of them and I'd love it if you commented down below and told me what you think makes a good friend too ♥ Enjoy!

10 Things That Make A Good Friend
  1. Listening. A good friend always listens. Whether it's something super important that happened or it's to boast about what Pokémon they've just caught on Pokémon Go, it's always lovely to have someone who will listen to you. Sometimes a friend will just need to splurge, boast, whine or be consoled about something and it is SO lovely to have a good friend we can do those things to when we need it most.
  2. Being there when they need you most. Following on from the previous point, sometimes you just need a friend to be there as well as listen. Even if it's just to watch a film with, talk at or to distract you from whatever's ruining your mojo. I love it when my friends distract me with something funny, a new story or just give me a hug. Yep, even something as small as giving a hug can tell a person you're there for them ♥
  3. Brutal honesty. From my personal experiences, a good friend has never lied to me when I needed to be told the truth. I've been given brutal honesty and actually in turn it's not as brutal as bluntly lying to you and telling you "everything is okay", or "you look good in that dress" when things aren't really okay and that dress is a curtain on you. I respect my friends so much more when they give me the truth because they were confident enough and kind enough to do so. Sometimes the honesty can be embarrassing but so funny. Example: "Yeah you got a hugggeeee bit of spinach in the middle of you teeth. LOL, how long you been walking around like that?"!
  4. Giving advice - even if you're a little rubbish at it. Friends are almost always a first point of call for advice. When I need a little advice, I know who I can count on and talk to in my time of need. And the same goes for them, they know they can come to me for advice whenever they need it. And I've been in situations where I don't know what I should advise a friend, but I've been honest and told them, "I don't know much about [insert problem here] but from what you've mentioned I think you should... [insert instinctive advice here]". You never know, though you think you haven't got the best advice, you could have helped your friend.
  5. Making each other smile and laugh. One of the most important and foundational parts of friendship is a happy and positive relationship. Friends are supposed to make you smile, happy and laugh. It doesn't matter if it's in their time of need or if you're just hanging out. A healthy and good friendship is based on making each other feel good when you're together right? :D
  6. Make time for each other. Friendships are like any other relationship you might have whether it be with a boyfriend/girlfriend or your family. You need to make time for friends. Friendship is like a flower, it needs the TLC to grow and flourish. If you don't water it or give it any TLC, it'll just wilt and die and nobody wants that. Making time for each other is important and it is healthy for your relationship and your own wellbeing. No matter what is going on in your world or how busy you are, you can't forget to water your friendship.
  7. Accept who they are. No matter who you are, what you like and what you do, someone will find you and your ways a little strange and vice versa. You might not totally agree with the same things as them and you might be complete and total opposites. But somehow in this beautiful world we live in, that someone is a good friend of yours! And one of the best things you can do in a friendship is simply accept them no matter what. No one is perfect and everybody at one point in their lives has made a mistake and as a friend it's your job not to judge. Well not entirely at least, because they'll expect you to judge and be (reference to number 3) totally honest with you. Either way, you accept them and they accept you. And that makes a good friend right there!
  8. Be loyal always. Friends stick together no matter what. You've seen Mean Girls, and what happens when you're not loyal right? Mean Girls might be a little OTT, but it's a lesson in loyalty really isn't it? Good friends know where their loyalties are and don't double cross you. I know I'm using a film to relate to this and not doing a good job explaining this one, but it's the simplest rule of friendship right? Loyalty is deep within the foundations of friendship; Without loyalty there isn't a friendship.
  9. Put each other up! Not down. Honestly, one of my favourite things about my best friendships are how much we support each other, celebrate our achievements, compliment each other and build each other up. A good friend will never put you down, but in fact do the opposite and always put you up! Is that even a saying? Well even if it isn't, I hope it makes sense. A good friend will always make you feel amazing and positive even if it's something as small as telling them "I love that lip colour on you!" or as big as "well done on the new job! I knew you'd get it"! Little things people, it's the little things that count too.
  10. Be YOU. Most important and probably should be number one... A good friend is always their truest self with you. If you can't be yourself with a friend, who can you be yourself with. Your good friend might be your best friend, your boyfriend, your sister, anyone! But you can't be a good friend back if you aren't yourself with them. And if they can't accept you for who you are (reference to number 7) then they're not exactly a good friend are they? Never change yourself for someone else, always be you and if they're a good friend they'll accept you for who you are, because you - are awesome ♥!
I'd love for you to tell me what you think makes a good friend in the comments below.
There were so many others I thought of whilst writing this, but I'll leave them for another time.
Which of the 10 do you agree with and what would you add to the list?

  3. This post made me really smile Cat! I believe honesty in a friendship is a main one as well as being supportive for each other throughout any situation. I always believe I should be myself with whoever I'm with, and if they don't like my fabulous unicorn personality, then they can go and find a not so fabulous unicorn to be friends with xD Brilliant post Cat! :)
