I'm going to start this post off with a very hypocritical statement: John and I aren't very big drinkers. So why on earth would we review any alcohol? Actually, though John and I aren't frequent drinkers, it doesn't mean that we don't drink. And when we do, I'm mixing cocktails whilst John enjoys his spirits straight on ice. So when Drinks In Tube * asked us if we would like to try one of their sets, we agreed and went for their rum set. With our caravan holiday week coming up, we had the best opportunity to sit down and really enjoy some new flavours of rum.
Drinks in Tube kindly sent us their latest collection of rums that isn't actually available on their website yet. They're actually launching it RIGHT NOW at the Spirit of Christmas Fair in Olympia London. Unfortunately today is the last day (6th November), but I'm sure they will be available online very soon! I had been meaning to post this sooner, but life got a bit too hectic this week...
The rum set comes packaged in a beautiful and luxurious black box and have each tube safely and well packaged inside between these foam dividers. They come in packs of four, with different flavours and all with these awesome twist top tubes. In this set, all the rums came from Mauritius with an alcohol content of 40%. The flavours in this set are Vanilla, White, Gold and Spiced. What I really loved about this, is that the packaging had details for each rum, their flavours and how it should be enjoyed, so we knew how to drink it best and what we were looking to taste.
John and I tried these out during one of our nights in the caravan, and with some ice and Pepsi at the ready we settled in with the TV and blankets for a lovely night in enjoying some great new flavours. I was pretty excited to try them, most of all I was excited to try the Vanilla and Spiced rum, where John was excited to also try the Vanilla and Gold rum.
Since we were both looking forward to trying the Vanilla rum most, we started with that. John tried his straight where I instantly mixed mine. I don't like straight drinks, so this was best for me. I instantly fell for it. It gave my drink that 'Vanilla Coke' taste and it was beautifully sweet. John said he enjoyed this one the most being both great straight and mixed in a drink.
We tried the White rum next, and found this one to be the least favourite for both of us. It didn't have anything distinct enough to mine and John's taste, but it doesn't mean it wasn't good! For us, it was best with the Pepsi for a decent mixed drink.
Next up, we tried the Spiced rum. We were both looking forward to this one after seeing it had hints of cinnamon and orange peel to give it its distinctive flavour. Both John and I preferred this as a mix better than straight on ice. It reminded me of Christmas and I thought would be a great drink to make that awesome Christmassy beverage!
Last but not least we tried the Gold rum. For us both, this was number three on our list behind the Vanilla and then the Spiced rum. It had a great rum flavour and John enjoyed this one best straight on ice whereas me being the cocktail queen that night, mixed it with Pepsi again! It had a lovely smooth flavour, but again I wouldn't pick it over the Vanilla or Spiced.
John and I really loved trying out these rums and if we were to buy larger bottles of this, I know we'd be straight on that Vanilla rum first! I also think a large bottle of the Spiced one would make a great Christmas gift.
If you enjoy a good spirit every now and then, or you like collecting and trying new flavours I would recommend visiting Drink in Tube at some point! They have an amazing range of rums, vodkas and gins alongside some wines like the ones we tried in the Date Night Box a few months ago. They make great alcoholic gifts for those who like to explore new drinks and flavours.
I might go for the Vodka one next!
